October Field Trip relocated to Newcastle

Saturday October 15, 2011  -  Due to an estimated 2 feet of new snow in the Cold Stream drainage near Truckee the October field trip has been changed.  The field trip will be in the Penryn / Newcastle area.

1   Link   Califonria State Railroad Museum
This is the premier railroad museum in the West. Its outstanding exhibits and events recapture the spirit railroading in California and the Western United States. Members receive museum admission as well as admission to Railtown 1887. Benefits also include special event and train ride privileges plus the quarterly On Track publication describing special exhibits and events at the museum.

A San Francisco Bay area organization dedicated to the preservation of steam and passenger railroad equipment and interpretation of local railroad history in the Bay Area and surrounding areas of California.
3   Link   Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Transportation Museum:
This museum commemorates the history of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad—a late 19 th and early 20 th Century shortline that ran between Colfax and Nevada City. The museum collection includes the only surviving NCNG steam locomotive No. 5 plus other operating narrow gauge steam locomotives including a Porter and Heisler type.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum preserves the railroad heritage of Nevada, including locomotives and cars of the famous Virginia & Truckee Railroad and other railroads of the Silver State.
5   Link   Pacific Locomotive Association:
Located at Niles Canyon in the East Bay area, the purpose of the organization is to preserve the physical aspects and atmosphere of Pacific Coast railroading during the period from 1910 to 1960. Their mission is to develop and operate a working railroad museum for the benefit of the general public. The Association welcomes men and women who would like to share in that mission.
6   Link   Portola Railroad Museum:
This is the collection of the Feather River Railroad Society, dedicated to the preservation and history of the Western Pacific Railroad. The museum collection includes an extensive list of diesel locomotives as well as an extensive array of passenger and freight railroad equipment.
7   Link   Railtown 1887 State Historic Park:
This park is part of the California State Railroad Museum located in Jamestown in the Mother Lode region of California. The grounds include the preserved roundhouse, shops and depot of the Sierra Railroad in their original configuration. This railroad and facilities have been used for the filming numerous western movies.
8   Link   Western Railway Museum:
This is the museum collection of the Bay Electric Railroad Association whose primary objective is the preservation of electric railway transportation heritage.
9   Link   Roots of Motive Power
Roots of Motive power is dedicated to preserving and restoring steam and diesel powered equipment used in the California north coast logging industry from the 1850s to the present.
