At this overlook known as American, trains used to stop at the platform so travelers could enjoy the view into the American River canyon far below.

Not far from this location at Shady Run, a passenger train was snowbound for nearly two weeks during the heavy snowstorms of January 1890.  Men on snowshoes brought supplies to the passengers from Towle about 3 miles away.
