Big Boy Returns to Roseville, Colfax & Truckee in April 2026 | Placer Sierra Railroad Heritage Society

UP 4014 “Big Boy” will make a coast-to-coast excursion in 2026 honoring the 250th anniversary of the founding of our country. A return visit to Roseville is scheduled for April 10-11, and Colfax on April 12. UP has just released a daily schedule for the western portion of the tour. with additional stops along with a map of the route. Big Boy will be on display in Roseville on April 10-11, and will make a 45-minute stop in Colfax April 12 from 12 noon to 12:45 and a 15-minute stop in Truckee from 4:45-5:00pm.

For the western leg of the tour follow this link for a complete schedule including planned stops. The train will travel westbound through Feather River Canyon with a day-long stop in Portola April 8, then brief stops in Oroville, Marysville and Lincoln on April 9 before proceeding to Roseville. The eastbound return will feature stops in Colfax and Truckee on April 12.

The eastern leg of the tour, anticipated to start in late spring, is still being finalized and will be announced soon.

UP’s website notes that Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, will be joined by two commemorative locomotives, including the railroad’s newest locomotive: No. 1776 – America250. This new commemorative locomotive pays tribute to the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of this nation. The locomotive will feature the emblem of the America250 Semiquincentennial Commission, the national nonpartisan organization established by Congress to lead the nation’s 250th anniversary.
